Powerful Filtration to Beat Air Pollution

In Hong Kong, the worst days for pollution are generally associated with very hot, fine and calm weather conditions in the region, which favour the formation and accumulation of ozone through photochemical reaction.

Such weather conditions mostly occur in the summer and autumn, especially when Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region are under the influence of subsiding air induced by tropical cyclones located in the Western Pacific Ocean around Taiwan. These conditions make it extremely difficult for air pollutants to be blown away, and the noxious air can be difficult to avoid even if you choose to stay indoors.

Research conducted by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) revealed that air pollution poses a serious environmental risk to our health. Fine particles easily find their way into lung alveoli and are carried via the bloodstream to expose virtually all cells in the body, including the heart, brain, bone and skin. Youngsters and unborn children are more vulnerable to air pollution because their bodies and organs are still developing.

Dr. David Ho, Specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, pointed out that around one-third of the population in Hong Kong suffer from nasal allergies, with 90% of cases being triggered by allergens such as mould, dust mites and fungi, and more than 50% of these cases resulting in sinusitis. Children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with chronic diseases need to pay particular attention to air quality and environmental hygiene because their immune systems are weaker.

Coping with Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution

Belongings are often stacked high in Hong Kong’s small apartments, which encourages the accumulation of dust. At the same time, people are frequently exposed to cooking fumes which makes indoor air quality even worse. Installing an air purifier in your home will be a big help in the fight against indoor and outdoor air pollution, providing cleaner, fresher air in just a short period of time.
