Hours spent by HK people every day

Research has shown that Hong Kong people spend nearly a quarter of every day on the internet, on average. Many of us spend much of our time surfing on the internet or browsing through out phone apps unless we are taking a rest. As a result, humans are increasingly suffering from “digital amnesia”, with our ability to remember details of our day-to-day lives on the decline as we grow more dependent on technology. What’s more, our communication skills may be affected as we don’t need to conduct face-to face conversations or simply just use emojis to replace words. This is especially true for teenagers.

According to the Thematic Household Survey Report No.75 published by the Census and Statistics Department in May this year, survey results on internet and PC penetration showed that internet and smartphone usage continues to increase. In 2021, 70% of persons aged 65 and over had used the internet in the past 12 months, while there was also an increase to 70% of elderly people having a smartphone. The survey also showed that more than 6 million people in Hong Kong aged 10 or above had a smartphone, while over 250,000 had two smartphones. The number of people with at least three smartphones reached 14,000.

Keep your eyes

We spend nearly a quarter of every day on the internet or using our smartphone, which explains why an increasing number of people have complained about finger and hand pain due to prolonged use of their device. In addition to the “text claw” or “cell phone elbow”, continued exposure to UV light or blue light over time could lead to eye strain and fatigue, affecting our eye health as a result. 

Common causes of include:

  • Looking at digital device screens
  • Not pausing to rest your eyes
  • Exposure to bright light
  • Pressure or tiredness
